The Heating System.
Seaham Library has two Viessmann Boilers CIB 200 that supply underfloor heating throughout the building. The underfloor heating is constructed of polyethylene pipes. The total system volume was calculated at 2200 litres from a drawing provided by Durham Council.
The Durham Council had made several changes to the way the system operates by adjusting BMS settings and decided to add new formulation Delta-T as a final energy reduction measure.
The Installation.
Delta-T was installed in the system at a rate of 1 litre Delta-T to 100 litres of system water volume. 22 litres of Delta-T were added to the system on the 15th of February for optimum energy savings. Water quality samples were taken prior to and after the addition of Delta-T.
The Monitoring.
The gas usage in this building is influenced by the external temperature. (all buildings are subject to population variation but this building which is open to the public should be less affected by this). The building because of the amount of external glass will be affected by sunlight heating the building – This can distort the Heating Degree Days (HDD) which reflects outside ambient temperature.
Firstly, a comparison was made of the energy savings in February, March, and April 2024 with the corresponding months of 2023. These savings would comprise savings made by Durham Council and savings made by the introduction of Delta-T. Then a further comparison was made between March and April 2024 with November and December 2023 when all the Durham Council modifications had been completed, and any savings made were solely attributable to Delta-T.
Full months were used and normalised using the Degree Days from Newcastle Airport.
THIS GAVE AN OVERALL SAVING OF 20% FROM THE INSTALLATION OF DELTA-T
