Introduction.SafeSol Ltd sponsored a PhD student, Ahmed Eltayeb, working under the supervision of Dr Mohammed Yassin, at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS).
Ahmed’s PhD was to investigate the use of surfactants for energy saving. As part of this work Ahmed created a thermal box which was used to mimic a room. The thermal box was an insulted box including a copper coil with temperature sensors connected to a computer.

The thermal box was used to mimic a room, the copper coil was used to represent a radiator, and the temperature sensors measured how quickly the box got to temperature with various solutions of surfactants/chemical additives.
Various solutions were injected into the copper coil (see figure 1) which were circulated at 66°C:

Then the temperature was measured to heat the room to certain temperatures. It was discovered that Delta-T allowed the box to get to 24°C 3.2 times faster than water alone and 1.43 times faster than water with AlkylPolyGlucoside. This information is shown in figure 2
Delta-T required 33% less energy to reach the same temperature set point as water alone. We have seen this experiment replicated in real life trials where building monitoring has shown that buildings get to operating temperature much faster than water alone.
In the thermal box water plus Delta-T heats up much quicker than water alone and water with APG products. We have seen this replicated in real life with heating systems at Bradford and Durham Council. The time to get to the heating set point is reduced. This means that as well as providing energy reduction through better heat transfer the heating systems can be set to come on later. This will again save energy.
