Introduction.

SafeSol asked Midland Corrosion to evaluate Delta-T to prove that it will NOT damage the materials and seals in heating systems.

Midland Corrosion Services (MCS) is one of the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) Organisation UK’s approved laboratory and the only independent laboratories in the country to carry out the NSF CIAS performance test for chemical inhibitors in the use of central heating systems.

MCS is accredited by ISO 9001:2015 with laboratory testing skills required by ISO 17025.

SafeSol has requested the evaluation test for Delta-T’s corrosion, scaling and rubber swell performance according to the NSF CIAS Testing Procedure (2021 version).

The Test.

Delta-T is not a corrosion inhibitor. However as it being added to heating systems with various metals and seals we wanted independent proof that it would not cause any damage to systems.

Therefore we commissioned Midland Corrosion Services to evaluate the corrosion behaviour, scaling tendency, and non-metallic compatibility performance of our unique, patented product.

The evaluation tests are carried out in two stages:

Corrosion, scaling and rubber swell tests by adding 1% Delta-T
Corrosion, scaling and rubber swell tests without adding the chemical (water alone)

All tests were carried out in accordance with the 2021 NSF CIAS testing procedure.

Corrosion Rate Determination.

The corrosion testing in both modified standard hard and soft water were carried out according to the NSF CIAS test procedure. Metal coupons were obtained from European Corrosion Supplies Ltd together with analysis certificates. The categories of coupons are listed as follows:

8 x StSt 1.4307 / 304L Stainless Steel
8 x CW 024A Copper
8 x CW 505L Brass
8 x Alu 6063 Aluminium

A 14-day testing of corrosion was initiated and scoped as per instructions from the NSF CIAS standard.

Scaling Determination

Delta-T solution made up in hard water was compared with standard hard water alone. Each solution was fitted with a stainless steel heater sheath. All the solutions were then heated to 82°C for 7 days. The heater sheaths were then dried and photographed and the solutions were allowed to stand for at least 30 minutes.

All the water samples were sent to a UKAS accredited analysis laboratory for calcium analysis.

Compatibility with Non-Metallic Materials

The hardness of the rubber samples was measured prior to the test. All rubbers showed the hardness levels within the acceptable range (<10% of shore hardness). Based on the 2021 NSF CIAS criteria, Delta-T is deemed to have passed the test if the volume swell of the rubber sample placed in the chemical is within the range of -5% to 5%.Delta-T was tested with the following rubber samples

EPDM-70 resin cured / EPDM-70 peroxide cured / EPDM-70 sulphur cured / NBR -70 peroxide cured

Conclusions.

Midland Corrosion carried out the corrosion testing in accordance with 2021 NSF CIAS Testing. They compared water (baseline) and 1% Delta-T for corrosion & scaling tests and 2% Delta-T for rubber swell tests.

The results show the following:

Adding 1% Delta-T chemical would NOT likely increase the corrosion risk of the tested metallic material coupons.
Adding 1% Delta-T chemical would NOT escalate the risk of scaling. The results also implied applying the Delta-T might have slightly improved the scaling resistance.
Adding 2% Delta-T chemical would NOT likely increase the tendency of rubber swell.
